Mar 26, 2010 I'm trying to decide between an all steel Kimber pro-carry TLE and a S&W 1911pd scandium aluminum frame pistol. My only concern with the S&W is the frames durability. Mar 19, 2011 FWIW, I originally bought the M&P 340 because of the stronger scandium aluminum alloy frame compared to my other Airweights, which had regular aluminum alloy frames (642-1 & 37-2) and the front X/S night sight (with the corresponding rounded rear notch). The fact that it chambered .357 Magnum wasn't particularly of interest to me.

Dec 03, 2008 So-called "scandium" frames are aluminum alloy frames. The aluminum alloy used in their tubing has about 2% of scandium added to it to increase strength slightly. This allows a frame tube to be made slightly thinner, therefore weigh slightly less than a tube made from an aluminum alloy not containing scandium.

Jan 02, 2017 See the area underneath the barrel that looks “shaved”. My question is this is this normal/typical with the Scandium guns? I’m shooting commercial loads for the designed caliber these are all, for the most part, big bore magnum guns. A little surprised, to be honest, that I’m getting what looks like unintended wear on the frames.

Oct 10, 2004 when smith says that their frames are scandium, they really mean aluminum alloy with scandium in the mix. it seems that when scandium is added to aluminum that the strength and wear resistance goes way up the chart. thats how the little 340's and 360's can handle .357 mag recoil and only weigh 12 oz. i had one for a while with crimson trace grips. it was a joy to

Jan 16, 2019 The very very small amount of Scandium added makes an alloy frame modestly stronger, but it is going to take you a long time and a lot of ammo to wear out any decent alloy 1911. Faster than a steel frame? Sure, but still a looong time. I like to use a light viscosity full synthetic grease on alloy frames too.

I am considering getting a new Commander-sized SW1911PD for concealed carry and wonder if I should be concerned about this. I've not handled and fired any of the larger Magnum revolvers using the Scandium frames, though, the 8-shot .357's intrigue me. The .44's do not (and I like .44 Magnum revolvers and am not recoil sensitive).

Apr 30, 2011 I don't know much about the Scandium J-frames, but have been looking for something for front pocket carry. Usually it is about $100 to $150 unless lots of drastic wear, firing and or issues. Gunbroker and Buds has this gun new for about $800 and LE pricing is about $650 . I shot about 75 rounds (.357 in 158 gr.) before a bullet became dislodged, thus locking the cylinder, and about 75 more rounds before the barrel shaking loose, TM. Most I could handle at one time was 32 rounds in a row.
